Eight Apps to Help Teach Foreign Languages

Learning foreign languages can be difficult, and teaching them also can be challenging. Luckily, a number of websites and apps are available to help students learn new languages. Whether it is Spanish, French, German, Italian or Latin, make learning fun and easy with these games and applications.

Here are eight apps to use in the world languages classroom:

  1. Duolingo: With this app, students can learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and other languages for free. Students will have fun while they learn, thanks to game-like levels and the option to compete with friends.
  2. Learn Spanish by Mind Snacks:  Mind Snacks is an entertaining app in which users play games, listen to audio clips and engage in other activities to learn Spanish. (The app also covers different languages.)
  3. Frenchie Teachie:  Beginners in French can learn the names of animals by listening to the name in French and tapping on the corresponding animal. Students can choose from three categories (farm, sea and wild animals) and hear a French song when they get the answer correct.
  4. Learn Italian by Mind Snacks:  Just like the Spanish version, this app features entertaining games students can play to learn Italian. Without the flashcards, players can listen to audio clips by a native speaker and level up with games.
  5. Memrise:  Users can learn languages, geography, history, pop culture and more for the language/country of their choice. From simple words to sentences, users can learn languages on the go.
  6. Busuu:  With Busuu, students learn a language in a fun and easy way. The app offers over 150 everyday topics containing more than 3,000 words and phrases with vocabulary and grammar lessons, audio dialogues and interactive tests.
  7. Play2learn French:  Designed for children ages 3  to 12, the app lets students play interactive games while learning a new language. Users can either point and listen to words or phrases or listen and point to find the object or word said by the speaker.
  8. Dic-Dic:  Use this app to practice spelling, writing and matching with four different languages. The game lets the user choose the difficulty, then shows pictures of objects and asks students to spell out the word.
