Six Bulletin Board Ideas for Anti-Bullying Awareness Month

October is Anti-Bullying Awareness Month, and schools all around the country will be spreading the word against bullying.

What is bullying?

According to stopbullying.gov, bullying is "unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance."

There are plenty of roles students can play when it comes to bullying. There are three types: the bully, the victim, or the witness. Someone who watches bullying occur may also be a bystander or an "upstander."

Teachers can encourage their students to learn more about bullying or speak out against bullying through lessons, videos, and displays throughout the classroom.

Here is a list of seven bullying bulletin board ideas:

  1. Stick it to the Bullies: Provided by The Creative Counselor, teachers can make their own anti-bullying bumper stickers to remind their students to pledge against bullying. The Bulletin board has a large car with the bumper stickers all around it. To make it more effective, teachers can get the students involved and make their own bumper sticker slogans.
  2. We Will Stand Up: With this bulletin board, students can make the pledge to stand up against bullying. The bulletin board will consist of a small school pledge and name tags of students' names on it. This bulletin board can go beyond the classroom and can be in the hallway, so the entire school can participate.
  3. Bully-Free School: Teachers can find words associated with bullying and create a bulletin board collage with the words, "Bully-Free School", and a large "no" symbol in red underneath it. Students will be intrigued by the photo and will want to read it. When they do, they will see words including, "help", "hurt", "victim", and "jerk."
  4. The Key to Being a Good Friend: Teachers can ask students to create their own keys when asked to write what they want and need in a friend. The keys can say things such as, "I am going to stand up for my friends", or "I will not get in a fight." Students will be able to see those keys every day to remember how to be a good friend.
  5. Bully-Free Zone: Similar to Bully-Free School, this bulletin board has a "no symbol" with the word "bullying." The board has acronyms explaining how students can deal with bullies, such as "SAFE" and "BRAVE" encouraging students to "say what they feel" and "behave."
  6. Meet the Defensive Line: Since October is also football season, grab the students' attention by making each student his or her own jersey to stand on the "defensive line." This will help them realize that they are on a team and what they can do to be "number one in bullying prevention."
