Map Headline List
This Map Headline List offers suggestions for 50 statistics pages students might create maps of using NationMaster.com. The statistics are simple to locate. At the top of the NationMaster home page, simply click
  • All Countries on the "Make your own graph" drop-down menu;
  • Top Ten on the "Compare" drop-down menu;
  • Category and Statistic as listed in the Map Headline List below;
  • Map & graph/table in the "View as" drop-down menu.
Before introducing students to their assigned categories, you might introduce to them the concept of per capita. Explain that the term means by each person. You might provide an example of the importance of reporting some statistics per capita: For example, the United States has the second largest number of robberies in the world; only Spain has more robberies. But the United States is a large country with many people. If you compared the number of robberies to the number of people in the United States, nine countries have more robberies per capita, or per person, than the United States has.

Provide each student (or pair of students, if you choose to have students work in teams) with a card on which you have written each category and statistic below.

Alternative: You could print out the text below and cut the printed pages into strips.

That way, each student knows exactly which statistic s/he is to view online and the headline for the map s/he will create. The words in parentheses offer a brief explanation of the statistic the student will research and map. Students might or might not number the countries they color in order of their appearance on the statistical lists they view.

An asterisk (*) before a category/statistic indicates that this is a statistic that might be easily understood by younger students. The asterisks are intended to help teachers of younger students select statistics that their students will find interesting and easy to comprehend.
