Grow snow crystals in your classroom with a few materials and a two-liter bottle!

  • follow instructions (with close supervision).

Materials Needed

  • empty 20-oz plastic Coke bottle
  • three large-diameter styrofoam cups (or something similar)
  • small kitchen sponge (1/2 inch thick)
  • short length of nylon fishing line
  • strong sewing needle
  • four straight pins
  • one paper clip
  • paper towels

In Growing Your Own Snow Crystals, Caltech's Kenneth G. Libbrecht explains how teachers and even students can grow snow crystals in the classroom with a few materials and a two-liter bottle. All instructions for an excellent science experiment are included. (This activity can be used as a demonstration in lower grades.)

 

Assessment

Students should be closely monitored during this experiment and may be asked to submit written notes from their work for evaluation.
