Mystery Vegetable Garden

Subject: Science
Grade: K-2, 3-5

Brief Description

Students plant vegetable seeds and guess which plants will grow.

Objectives

Students

  • define the word grow,
  • plant seeds and monitor the plants' growth,
  • predict the names of the plants that will grow from the seeds.

Keywords

garden, mystery, plants, seeds

Materials Needed

  • different vegetable seeds in packets (for example, tomato, pepper, cucumber, corn, lettuce)
  • pictures of the vegetables cut from the seed packets
  • wooden sticks or plant markers
  • tape or a stapler
  • several 6-inch pots
  • potting soil
  • water

Lesson Plan

  • Discuss the meaning of the word grow. Ask students to name things that grow.
  • Tell students that they are going to plant a mystery vegetable garden. Ask students to name some vegetables. Write their responses on the board.
  • Show students the seeds to be planted and pictures of the plants. Mix up the pictures and the seeds. Ask students to match the pictures of the vegetables with their seeds. Tape or staple the picture onto the plant marker.
  • Show students how to put the soil into the pots, plant the seeds, and water.
  • Remind students to check the plants daily to monitor their care and growth.
  • After plants have grown a few inches, ask students whether they want to keep their choices or change the plant markers.
  • Plant the vegetables outdoors.
  • As the vegetables come to full growth, determine which predictions were correct.
Variation: Plant a mystery flower garden from seeds or bulbs.

Assessment

Evaluate students' participation and answers.
