Keywords

basketball, music, math, addition, subtraction

Materials Needed

  • a small basketball hoop that hooks over a chalkboard or door
  • a soft ball that fits through the hoop
  • tape
  • flashcards of such rhythm math problems as "quarter note + quarter note + half note + whole note =" with the answers on the back

Lesson Plan

  • Hang a basketball hoop over a door and use a strip of tape on the floor as a free-throw line.
  • Organize the class into two teams. Alternating teams, have students add the notes on the flashcards for a chance to shoot the basketball. Students who give a correct answer and make the shot get 2 points for their team. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Note: This activity is available online at Music Basketball for Sports-Minded Students.
