Materials Needed

You can find many sites on the Internet that present archives of fun photos that might be used for this activity. You might select and print photos from these sites:

  • Worth 1000 Photoshop Galleries
  • Dave's Daily Funny, Strange, Bizarre Picture and Photos
(These sites are likely to include images that will be inappropriate for classroom use, but there will be others that will be very worthy story starters once printed. Do not provide URLs for students, as a URL could provide easy access to some inappropriate images.)

    Lesson Plan

Display an interesting or amusing photograph and ask each student to write a caption to go with the picture.

You might alternate a write-a-caption activity with four other writing activities to provide students with a week of varied writing prompts. Education World's Writing Bug archive provides another source for a once-a-week writing activity.

    Assessment

Evaluate students on the appropriateness of their captions.
