Christmas-Tree-Shaped Poem Cards

Brief Description
Students create holiday cards with poems in the shape of a Christmas tree. The poems tell how they will spread joy this holiday season.

Objectives

Students

  • think about ways -- big and small -- in which they can spread joy during the holiday season,
  • create poems in the shape of a Christmas tree,
  • create holiday cards from the poems.
Optional: Students learn to use formatting commands in word processing programs to center text.

Materials Needed

  • student-written poems (see the Lesson for more information)
  • construction paper (different colors)
  • student-selected decorating materials
  • scissors
  • glue or paste
  • optional: word processing software

Lesson Plan

  • Link to the lesson Christmas-Tree-Shaped Poems for directions on creating the poems. Tell students that they are going to make holiday cards using their poems.
  • Distribute construction paper and other decorating materials.
  • Tell students to cut out their poems. Then ask students to fold the construction paper in half and paste the poem on the right inside half of the folded construction paper.
  • Let students decorate their cards with materials of their choice. Students share their cards with friends and family.

Assessment

Observe students' participation. Evaluate students' poems and cards.
