Brief Description

Students explore the area around their school and create a field journal about the bugs they find there.

Materials Needed

  • plastic jars (with and without lids)
  • butterfly nets
  • magnifying glasses
  • white cloths, craft sticks, and other materials or tools useful for catching and observing bugs
  • three field journal pages for each student
  • pencils or pens
  • crayons or colored markers

Lesson Plan

Take students to an area outside the school building. Distribute three field journal pages to each student. Ask students to find and observe three of the bugs they find in the area. Then have them draw a picture of each bug and complete a field journal report for each.

Assessment

Students will be evaluated based on the information in their field journals.
