Materials Needed

Lesson Plan

Arrange students into small groups, and provide each group with the names of several orders of insects mentioned in the posting Best estimate of the number described insect species.

Tell each group they are going to create a bar graph showing the number of species in their assigned orders.

Ask students in each group to read the posting. Discuss the increments they will need to use to represent all the assigned orders. Review the procedures for creating a bar graph.

When the bar graphs are completed, check them for accuracy. Then display all the graphs together on a classroom bulletin board to give a picture of the number of insect species in all the orders combined.

Assessment

Students will be evaluated on the accuracy of the bar graphs.
