Teacher of the Day

Name:  William Domiano

School:  St. Sebastian Regional School

Subject: K-8 Computers and 7-8 Science

State:  PA

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

My fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Powell. She saw something in me that I didn't know existed yet. We had another student who was struggling with school that year in our class. Mrs. Powell asked myself and another student to tudor the student. We were able to get her from being a D student to becoming a B student. That was the spark that got me into education.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

I started out subbing at eight different school districts and two intermediate units. I then moved into a permanent sub position for a year. After that I become a three-day computer teacher where I currently teach. I taught so many different subjects and grade levels as a substitute teacher. I think that experience made me very flexible and allowed me to be where I am now.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Find a way to both relate to your students and get them to want to be in your class. When I was subbing, I created a game that the kids loveed to play throughout the day. I used it as a reward system while I was subbing. Not only did we have fun during the day, but we also managed to cover what the teacher had left for the students. The kids learned becuase they were enjoying the day and were relaxed.

My best day in the classroom was when…

the kids have an "Ah-Ha" moment. It's when the subject becomes clear to a student through the lessons that involve hands-on elements and multiple intelligences.

The best compliment I've ever received from a student or parent was...

I had a former student helping me set up my computer lab. He was working for community service hours. He thanked me for teaching him HTML. I taught it to him as a 6th grader and he was still using it as a 12th grader.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

Going to the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science State Competition. It's a science competition that our students take part in every year.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

An LCD projector for a computer.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

Banana, string cheese and a bottle of water.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

Phineas and Ferb, thanks to my children.
