Teacher of the Day

Name:  Lorraine Perez

School: Russellville High School

Subject: Biology, Anatomy, Zoology & College Biology

State:  AL

What or who inspired you to become a teacher?

My high school biology teacher inspired me to be a biology teacher. Being a teacher aide in his class was very interesting. As I helped with setting up labs, I quickly learned how fun science can be.

How are things different for you now, compared to when you first started teaching?

Technology has made a huge impact in my classroom. When I first started teaching we had overhead projectors. Now smart boards, iPads and computer technology have greatly increased student attention and allowed teachers to be more creative. Learning is fun.

What advice would you give to a new or struggling teacher?

Never give up! If a lesson does not work, scratch it and try again. I use many resources for lessons and usually change certain components to meet my students’ individual needs. We all struggle to keep our heads above water for the first few years, but it does get easier.

My best day in the classroom was when…

Every day that I see a light bulb go off in a student’s brain is a "best" day. I strive for those light bulb moments.

The best compliment I ever received was...

A parent told me recently that she was so glad that her daughter had me as a teacher. She said she learned more in my classes than any of her other classes and that is why she is doing so well in college.

What's your favorite part of the school year?

I love teaching classes in the Spring because that is when I get to actively participate with my science club students on an annual Spring outing.

What is your one must-have item for the classroom?

A computer.

What do you eat for breakfast on school days?

Egg sandwich on wheat bread rounds with juice.

What movie or TV show do you secretly love?

Gone With the Wind
