Site Review: The Stacks for Kids

Site URL:  https://kids.scholastic.com/kids/home/

Content:  At Scholastic’s The Stacks, students can post book reviews, get reading recommendations, play games and discuss literature with children their age. Teachers can use the site to get kids involved with an online educational forum that’s an alternative to Facebook and other social media platforms. Users can even watch “Meet the Author” videos.

Design:  The site design is colorful and makes it easy for young people to explore. There are only a few panels the user can click, as well as a navigation bar at the top. On the right side, children can take polls, such as “Who is your favorite heroine?” and play other games.

Review:  The Stacks features a variety of books, reviews, games and more. Reviews and blogs on books such as the Harry Potter, Goosebumps and Babysitter’s Club series are all written by students, so there is common ground between users and writers. The literature-focused games are educational and interactive, and the social media-like component is safe and classroom-friendly.

Bottom Line:  This easy-to-navigate site provides a safe way for students to create their own profiles, interact with peers and learn about literature.
