The Tall and Short of It

Use these math-based puzzles, problems, and brainteasers as icebreakers, transition fillers, and ready-made math challenges -- to help answer the age-old kids' question: 'Why do we need to learn Math?'

Directions:

Marisol, Sarah, Amy, Ruth, Suri, and BethAnn are lined up according to height. The girls' heights are listed on the chalkboard. Using the clues below and on the chalkboard, figure out each girl's name and height and write it on the nametag.

  • Marisol is to the right of Ruth.
  • Suri is to the right of Sarah.
  • Amy is taller than half the girls in the class.
  • BethAnn is five inches shorter than Amy.
  • Ruth is second in line.

Now it's time for the boys to line up. Can you help them figure out where to go? The boys' heights are listed on the chalkboard. Using the clues on the chalkboard and below, figure out each boy's name and height and write it on the correct nametag.

  • Pablo is 4 inches taller than Ruth and 2 inches shorter than Charles.
  • Raymond is taller than half the girls in the class.
  • Brad is one foot taller than Alex.
  • Charles is between Suri and Sarah
  • Alex is second in line.
