Teacher Linda Finn introduced a class store as a way to encourage good behavior and good work habits. It was also a way to reinforce counting skills and the value of money. Each of Finn's students received a sheet of paper divided into columns labeled with the days of the week and rows labeled with the positive behaviors she wanted to support with her token economy reward system:

  • Work completed accurately: Assignments are completed in class with 85 percent or better accuracy.
  • Work completed on time: Given ample time, work is completed accurately.
  • Appropriate seating posture: Sits in the chair with all four legs on the floor.
  • Positive attitude: This category is used for students who have attitude difficulties.
  • Super Student: This is a bonus for having achieved all the above.
  • Each day, Finn places a star or checkmark in the appropriate boxes, and students receive a nickel for each star or checkmark they earn -- up to $.25 per day or $1.25 per week. Students can spend their money to buy items from her store. She picks up items in many places, and many parents like the idea of the store so much that they contribute items to it.
