for When you are running out of creative ideas for interesting homework assignments, turn to your students. Once per month, allow them to choose their own "homework" -- baking with a family member, doing a woodworking project, planting a garden, or another project they devise -- and report to the class on their activities. Have the students submit on paper a description of the activity and what was learned from it along with a parent's signature.
