Each week, Education World offers a new idea to help you "make over" boring book report formats. If you're looking for a way to spice up book reports -- and truly engage students in reading -- you've come to the right place. Check out this week's makeover idea
Students create life-size "portraits" of characters in books they've read.
Invite each student to sketch, draw, paint, or sculpt a portrait of a character in a recently read book. Explain that the portrait should be accompanied by a written "portrait" of the chosen character. The written piece might include a physical description, information about character traits, and explanations of how events in the book affected the character. (Did he grow a beard to hide a scar? Did fear turn her hair white overnight?) Display students' portraits in a classroom or hallway art gallery.
