Book Review: Turnaround Tools for the Teenage Brain

Title:  Turnaround Tools for the Teenage Brain - Helping Underperforming Students Become Lifelong Learners, by Eric Jensen and Carole Snider. Jossey-Bass, 2013.

Description:  The teenage years are tough for many reasons. They’re even harder for students who are struggling in school. Turnaround Tools for the Teenage Brain offers teachers of teenagers proven strategies for helping them become successful learners.

Jensen and Snider explain how to encourage students to develop optimism despite past experiences, and they offer ideas for all the key players in teens’ lives—including teachers, parents and support staff. The science-based influences educators can have on teenage students are referred to as the “big four” and include 1) attitude in relation to influence over learning diversity and effort; 2) cognitive capacity in relation to self-esteem, attitude and other components; 3) effort in relation to all three factors and successful ways to sustainably motivate; and 4) focused strategy, which helps apply the factors to educating in a sustainable way.

This book outlines a realistic path for changing students at their core. The authors equip teachers to exert a positive influence through strategies that reach beyond the high school years. Young people are likely to improve not only their behavior, but also their attitude toward learning.

Bottom Line:  With this resource, teachers can help students become more determined about their education and transform their lives for the better.
