Grant Name:
Redwood Education Grant

Funded by:
Save the Redwoods League

Description:
Firsthand visits to a redwood park, particularly as children during family visits, have traditionally nurtured support for redwood forest conservation. Current trends in changing population demographics within the state and nation, as well as shifting lifestyle and cultural preferences, are decreasing general public exposure to the outdoors, including the redwood forest. Save the Redwoods League believes that if people experience the majesty and ecological complexity of the redwoods, they will be inspired to support the protection of the redwood forest. Those experiences may also nurture a greater conservation ethic in other areas of their lives. Mission: The Education Grants Program was established in 2000 to foster a deeper understanding of redwood forests through personal visits and educational experiences among a broad, diverse audience.

Grant Name:
Mentoring Children of Prisoners

Funded by:
U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children & Families

Description:
The Administration for Children and Families' (ACF) Administration on Children, Youth and Families' (ACYF) Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) is accepting applications for the Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program. This program supports the creation and maintenance of one-on-one mentoring relationships between children of incarcerated parents and caring, supportive adult volunteer mentors. The intent of this program is to support the establishment or expansion and operation of mentoring programs, using a network of public and private community entities, in areas with substantial numbers of children of incarcerated parents. The MCP program is designed to be a community-based mentoring program in which children and youth ages four to 18 are appropriately matched with an adult mentor who has been screened and trained, for a one-on-one (one mentor/one youth), friendship-oriented (non curriculum-based) mentoring relationship. The purpose of the MCP program is to create quality, lasting, one-on-one relationships that provide young people with caring role models for future success. Mentors interact with mentees on a regular and consistent basis to provide support, encouragement, and advice; providing opportunities for mentees to gain new skills and interests and expand their experiences beyond their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Successful mentors do not try to take the role of parent or teacher, but act as a trusted friend, guide, and role model for mentees.

Grant Name:
Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants

Funded by:
National Endowment for the Arts

Description:
The Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants category offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Age alone (e.g., youth, seniors) does not qualify a group as underserved; at least one of the underserved characteristics noted here also must be present. This category, as an essential component of the Arts Endowment's goal of providing wide access to artistic excellence, supports local projects that can have significant effects within communities. Grants are available for professional arts programming and for projects that emphasize the potential of the arts in community development. Partnerships can be valuable to the success of these projects. While not required, applicants are encouraged to consider partnerships among organizations, both in and outside of the arts, as appropriate to their project.
