The phrase is Latin for "after this, therefore
because of this," and it means that, just because one thing comes after another, it doesn't mean that it was caused by that previous thing.
"I put the garbage out last
night, and this morning aliens from Mars landed and stole the garbage. Putting the garbage out early *causes* Martians to land and steal garbage!"
